Kayaking this morning

Kayaking this morning

As I was going out, a brown bat ray swam swiftly underneath and up the channel. It might be the start of their mating season, but I didn't see another.

As I came out into the open ocean, there were extended masses of sea foam as if from strong winds and big breakers. I followed along to investigate and the wind got ever stronger from the south – an unusual direction at this time of year. The sea had an unusual sharp chop to it, not the long, steady swells of the Pacific.

There were a few paddle boarders out, a few beach walkers as well, but very few people for the start of a holiday weekend. A little tern dropped down from the sky for breakfast.

The foam was breaking up into little “bergy” bits as I paddled along. By the time I turned around the sea foam had been mostly swept into shore.

Coming back up the channel, the big powerboats were emerging and headed out to sea, maybe for a Memorial Day weekend run to Catalina. One long, slender 50 foot racing sloop came by with only a solo sailor visible at her helm.

A cormorant was bathing and washing off its feathers, and further along a big sea lion surfaced for a look around.
