Trump’s Efforts to Create an Insurrection, Overthrow an Election and What Should be Done?

Trump has encouraged his supporters to come to Washington DC, to invade the US Capitol and to overthrow the electoral decision by American voters ousting him as President. They have done so and are inside the US Capitol; there is gunfire. According to press reports, the insurrectionists were armed, had pipe bombs and used tear gas. Apparently, they broke into both the House and Senate chambers. Lawmakers are sheltering in place.

Three things need to happen: 1) the Police need to remove the Trump insurrectionists, and they need to be charged; 2) the Vice President and the Cabinet need to remove Trump for the next two weeks, acting under the 25th Amendment, and 3) Trump needs to be charged with sedition. See https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-CONAN-1992/pdf/GPO-CONAN-1992-10-26.pdf for the procedures and standards for invoking the 25th Amendment.

After the dust clears and emotions subside, Congress may need to re-impeach Trump and this time convict him, putting fitting closure to a scandalous ending to his four years in the highest office in the land. Republicans need to start the process of cleansing themselves from the stain and stench of Trump and Trumpism. This is his second serious impeachable offense within the last week shortly after asking Georgia’s Secretary of State to find him 12,000 votes.
