Dear friends and family,
I hope you will consider supporting Lawyers Defending American Democracy (www.ldad.org). We have filed for our 501(c)(3) status and started the process of hiring an interim executive director to help lead the organization.
LDAD was formed to defend American democracy and the rule of law against a systematic assault on the core institutions and values of our now fragile American democracy. We have been doing extraordinary work on the disciplinary proceedings against lawyers such as Rudy Giuliani who filed law suits without any semblance of a legal or factual basis and lied repeatedly to the courts and the public as part of his efforts to have the judiciary reverse the American voters’ decision last November to oust President Trump from office. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/21/nyregion/giuliani-trump-law-license.html
Many of us believed that the 2020 election and the civic response to the insurrection to overthrow the presidential election signaled a national, bipartisan renewal of support for the fundamental principles of our constitutional democracy. Unfortunately, the events of the past months in far too many state legislatures and in Congress make clear that our hopes and beliefs were far too optimistic. Congress was unable to reach a bipartisan agreement to investigate the events of the January 6 insurrection. State efforts to suppress voting, curtail free speech, and limit US citizens’ rights under the Constitution have been unstinting and wide ranging, as Ron Brownstein catalogued in a recent article in the Atlantic. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2021/06/republican-state-legislatures-changes/619086/ The assaults on our democracy are metastasizing rather than diminishing.
As a result, we decided we must retain an Executive Director to build greater short- and long-term sustainability and strength for LDAD. This will require funding and help enable LDAD to act effectively in defense of our democracy, the rule of law, and the values of our Constitution.
We hope that you will join us in this effort and make a contribution in whatever amount you can afford to support LDAD as we move forward.
