Trump and US AID (Agency for International Development)

President Trump and Elon Musk are trying to eliminate US AID. There was a cogent and passionate defense of the agency last night on PBS by a very conservative Republican, Andrew Natsios. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jMq5XzVBng He described it as one of the most effective agencies in the US government, very pro-business, and essential to the US roles in providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief all over the world.

Essentially, Elon Musk (a Trump supporter, but not elected to any office whatsoever) ordered the program shut down and closed the offices. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/what-is-usaid-trump-musk-shut-down-budget-funding-doge-rcna190441

Only Congress can do this. President Kennedy initially created the program; Congress has authorized and funded it. It spends roughly $68 billion on humanitarian aid, such as food, medicines and economic development. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyezjwnx5ko President Trump has the right to appoint its top administrators subject to Senate approval. He has no right to terminate it without Congressional approval. https://www.wsj.com/opinion/trump-usaid-and-the-rule-of-law-us-agency-for-international-development-3177a22c
