LA Community College Board

LA Times Recommendations

10/4/20

Community colleges provide higher education to the highest percentages of California college students and high percentages of racial minorities. The LA Community College District serves 120,000 students enrolled in nine colleges at a cost of $5.4 billion. The Times recommends Andra Hoffman, Gerald Anderson, Nichelle Henderson and Chris Han.

Seat 1: Andra Hofman is experienced and serves as the Board President and has done a very good job says the LA Times.

Seat 3: Gerald Anderson: He’s a business consultant and business instructor at West LA College and LA City College. He’s African American and would add diversity to the Board. He would replace David Vela, who the Times notes is a political appointee and operative.

Seat 5: Nichelle Henderson: She’s been a middle school teacher and is a faculty advisor and lecturer at Cal State for teachers in training. She would replace Scott Svonkin who the Times criticizes as disruptive and ineffectual.

Seat 7: Chris Han: He’s a lawyer and adjunct instructor in business law at LA Mission College. The Times thinks he’s a better choice than the incumbent, Mike Fong.
